“FSS Graduates: Journeys That Shape the Future”

A dynamic, story‑driven page that highlights graduates not just by what they achieved, but who they became through the FSS experience.

Elyssa

elysaI began my journey with the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program as a married mother of two, working full-time and determined to build a better future. Over time, life brought many changes, and I faced the challenges of becoming a single mother of three. Despite these obstacles, I remained committed to my goals and to creating stability for my family.

Through the FSS program, I grew both personally and professionally. I started with a GED and, with perseverance, became a college graduate. I also advanced in my career, working at Coastal Max Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center, where I serve as a Dental Assistant. My training and dedication have opened doors for continued growth, including the opportunity to earn certifications that will help me increase my income and continue moving forward.

The program taught me invaluable skills in financial management, credit building, and goal setting. My greatest accomplishment was learning to master my goals—big or small—and realizing that I could achieve them, even as a single parent. At times, I wanted to give up, but with encouragement, support, and determination, I stayed the course.

Today, graduating from the FSS program fills me with hope and confidence. My vision for the future includes becoming fully self-sufficient, purchasing a home, and creating a strong foundation for my children. To others walking a similar path, my message is simple: take it one goal at a time, use the support offered, and believe in your ability to succeed.

Maria

MariaMy name is Maria, and my journey through the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program has been one of growth, resilience, and determination.

When I first joined the program, I was a single mother raising three children while working as a style team member at a retail store.

At that time, I hadn’t started college yet, and I was doing my best to balance work and family while thinking about how to create a better future for my kids.

Then COVID-19 changed everything. I lost my job and had to quickly figure out my next steps. It was a stressful and uncertain time, but I didn’t give up. I took on temporary work and kept pushing forward, knowing I had to stay strong for my family.

Eventually, I found an opportunity with Momentum Work Inc. I started as a job coach, and over time, through hard work and dedication, I was able to grow into my current role as an Employment Specialist. I’ve now been in this position for over four years, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

One of my biggest accomplishments during the FSS program was enrolling in college. That was a huge step for me. Balancing school, work, and raising my children wasn’t easy, and there were times when it felt overwhelming. But I stayed committed to my goals and kept reminding myself why I started.

At first, managing everything—work, school, and life—was one of my biggest challenges. Over time, I learned how to better manage my time, stay organized, and prioritize what mattered most. It didn’t happen overnight, but little by little, I found my rhythm.

I also want to take a moment to share how much I truly appreciate my FSS Coordinator, Jessica. She supported me, guided me, and was there for me during some of the times I needed it most. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed or unsure, and she reminded me of how much I had already accomplished throughout my journey in the FSS program. She helped me see my own growth and encouraged me to keep going, reminding me that I still have so much more to achieve and not to give up. That support meant more to me than I can fully express.

What helped me succeed was staying consistent, setting clear priorities, and asking for help when I needed it. I’ve learned that it’s okay to take things one step at a time and that progress is still progress, no matter how small it may seem.

Today, I am married and continue to work toward building a stable and successful future for myself and my three children. I’m proud of the life I’m creating and excited for what’s ahead.

If I could share anything with others in the FSS program, it would be this: don’t give up on yourself. There will be challenges, but they don’t define you. Stay focused on your goals, believe in your ability to grow, and don’t be afraid to lean on your support system. It’s okay if everything doesn’t get done in one day—just keep moving forward. Your hard work will pay off.

Nicole

NicoleAt the time, I didn’t have my diploma, and I struggled to maintain a job because I had no family support to help with my children. Life felt like it was throwing bricks at me—but instead of letting them weigh me down, I used those bricks to start building my future.

Today, I am proud to share that I earned my diploma, and I am now employed in a wonderful position with the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District, a job that truly supports both me and my family. We have been able to save money, and I am setting my sights on my next goals: applying to college to pursue a degree in social work and, eventually, becoming a homeowner. The FSS homebuyer workshop was an incredible resource that has given me the tools and knowledge to take this next step.

I would like to give special thanks to Maria Ayala, who stood by me with an open heart, shed tears with me, and believed in me even when I wanted to give up. As the saying goes, you get out of life what you put in—and I put in the work. Today, I can proudly say that work has paid off.

Finally, I want to thank the Housing Authority and Jessica Duckett for guiding me every step of the way. Jessica, you are truly amazing, and I am so grateful for everything you have done for me.

I am a single mother of two teenagers who were just 9 and 11 years old when I began my journey in the FSS program. In the early stages, I worked part-time while completing the prerequisite courses needed to pursue my goal of becoming a nurse. Once I was accepted into the nursing program, I made the difficult decision to reduce my work hours so I could fully commit to my education as a full-time student.

Balancing motherhood with the demands of rigorous coursework, daily studying, and two to three days each week of on-site clinical rotations was challenging, but it also strengthened my resilience and determination. I learned the importance of discipline, time management, and prioritizing what truly mattered. The nursing program required sacrifices from both me and my family, but those sacrifices brought us closer together and reminded us that perseverance and hard work can lead to meaningful change and a brighter future.

Rosealva

RosealvaWhen I first entered the program, I was a single mother with one child, and I am still currently single. At that time,

I was a high school graduate working full-time, trying to balance providing for my family while figuring out what my next steps in life should be. I knew I wanted more for myself and for my daughter, but I wasn’t sure how to get there.

Today, I am proud to say that I work for Lompoc Valley Medical Center as a Personal Assistant, where I have been employed for three years. Through hard work and determination, I also earned a Vocational Certificate as a Nursing Assistant, which gave me the chance to grow professionally and continue advancing my skills.

The program helped me face one of my biggest fears—going back to school. At first, the thought of returning to school felt overwhelming and even impossible. But with time, dedication, and encouragement, I conquered that fear.

Looking back now, I am proud of the education and training I have completed and the doors it has opened for me.

The program was not always easy. There were many challenges along the way that made me want to give up. But I knew my goals, and I knew how much they meant—not just for me, but for my daughter as well. She was my biggest motivation to keep pushing forward.

There were times when I was unemployed, and that season was very difficult for my family. Even during those hard times, I held onto my goals. Eventually, when I returned to work, I was able to build on my experience, gain new training certificates, and continue progressing toward the future I wanted.

Looking back on this journey, I see how much I’ve grown and how much I’ve accomplished. I am proud of the person I have become, and I am thankful for the support and guidance that helped me reach this point. Most importantly, I am proud that I never gave up—and that I was able to create a better path for myself and my daughter.
