A Home, A Future
At Hasbarco, we believe that a safe and stable home is essential for every family. Initiatives like NAHRO’s poster contest remind us that children are our future and that their voices and dreams deserve to be heard. Each poster celebrates what home means, inspiring us to keep working for happy families and safe homes.
NAHRO holds an annual national poster contest for youth who live in affordable housing owned or administered by NAHRO member agencies. Each piece of art shares the children’s thoughts on the theme of “What Home Means to Me.” Hundreds of beautiful posters from children across the nation are entered in local, state and regional competitions. A panel of judges selects 12 winners and one grand prize winner, who is awarded a trip to Washington, D.C. to meet his or her elected representatives. The winning posters are collected in the Housing America calendar, a year-long reminder of importance of safe, decent and affordable housing to children and families nationwide.

“To me, this is a very safe environment. After living in an old apartment for 8 years, I feel more free in my new home. I have privacy now after having to share a room with my mom and two sisters. I even have more space to play with my friends and family. I love having my own room because I get to enjoy more time alone (which I enjoy). I am forever grateful to have such an amazing place to live.”

“To me, home means you have a roof over your head and it’s a place you live in with your family. You have a bed, a place to be with your parents and siblings and a safe place to be at. A home can be clean, decorated, messy, entertaining and many more things. I love my room the most, it’s my favorite part about my home because I get to be by myself when I would like to, I can decorate it how I want, and I can avoid being disturbed when I have friends over.”

Happiness is what I feel when I enter my home with family. The happiness I’ve experienced makes my heart fill with joy. I am blessed to have such a loving family and caring to my family is everything to me no matter what. Yes, me and my siblings do argue sometimes but at the end of the day they are still my family and I will love them no matter what. For me God is my home because all my life he has been there for me even when I don’t see it. God has changed my family’s life in so many ways. God is my home wherever I go, he always helps me even when I don’t know he does. Thank you guys for this opportunity!”

“To me, home means family, and not just that, but also the love I have for them, and vice-versa. Home to me is in those small moments, it’s in staying up late, making snacks with my (now-late) grandmother, because these memories, and others like it, will always be the closest thing to home for me. For me, home has never been a place, it’s the people I love. That love binds us together, no matter where we are. Whether we share the same roof, live miles apart, or have no roof at all, we still have each other.”
